The Price We Pay

From a comment I dropped at Musings From The Hinterland:

I believe universal health care could suck the life out of living in America. It seems the end of heroism. Think of all the amazing stories we've heard about, where whole neighborhoods and towns rally around a sick person who can't afford expensive medical treatments. Think of the fund-raising, the charitable drives; think about the bake sales and motorcycle rallies and skate-a-thons and countless other awesome community-based, VOLUNTARY actions that will be lost if EVERY medical expense were covered -- FOR FREE! Oh, sure, kids will still die and their parents won't be bankrupt, but, as T. S. Eliot might have said, "Where is the LIFE we have lost in public funding?"

I fucking knew it. Christians don't like the government doing anything good because Christians need a steady stream of downtrodden, poverty-stricken victims in order to justify their existence and show their charity.

Your charity failed millions for decades. The fact is, you want victimhood throughout America so you can pick up the pieces of a few of their broken lives just to aggrandize "charity" (see also: religion).

Utterly sickening. Fucking leave if you don't like it. Go live in Somalia, it's a deregulated paradise, and plenty of people there need your help. What are you waiting for?

Dear Ginx,

You wrote:

Here's how it SHOULD have read:

DEMOCRATS (and progressives) don't like free individuals doing anything good because DEMOCRATS need a steady stream of downtrodden, poverty-stricken victims in order to justify their existence and show their "charity."

You should have written:

Democrats and their policies, their charities, have failed millions for decades. The fact is, Democrats want victimhood throughout America so they can pick up the pieces of a few broken lives just to aggrandize "charity".

"Utterly sickening" indeed, especially when Democrats hope to make everyone healthier. It is an ironic healthfulness that is really a sickness unto death (to borrow Kierkegaard's fine riff).

I can only shake my head in sorrow for the true millions who were killed, and those who probably wish they had been, by the great charity of the Soviet Union, China, Albania, Cambodia, and all those other fine, charitable "we're all brothers!" states.

The irony, really is astounding.

Peace.

Good grief Ginx, do you really feel that's what the motive is? Where is you evidence? Is your way of relieving poverty the only way? Do the unintended consequences not mean anything to you?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of us who worry about things like health care for the less fortunate. We disagree on the means to attain that laudable end, i.e. helping to provide it.

It is faith in the government to meet all needs that gives success stories like Hurricane Katrina. While FEMA was standing around, it was the people who took it upon themselves to do something.

When government gets involved, they just skim off the top. See, e.g. Social Security Taxes which until the baby boom screwed it up from an actuarial standpoint, provided billions of dollars in excess of benefits which Congress spent on pet projects willy-nilly.

As for the present bill, which I have read, it actually provides tax incentives for me to reduce other financial benefits I provide in order to by something my employees do not want.

How is the government helping these people, who are high school graduates working as secretaries or receptionists?

The fact is, when an entity, call it government or church or cub scout pack assumes the responsibility for providing something, it provides a disincentive to individuals to do anything.

That was the point of Bill's comment and it had nothing to do with Christians or atheists or Buddhists.

It has to do with human nature.

Babies die so you can look like heroes with grandiose fundraisers where pastors skim off the top. Period, the end.

Wow, Ginx, that's a real stopper.

You should have written:

Babies die so Democrats and progressives can look like heroes with grandiose policies, and where they then skim off the top, lining their own pockets and the pockets of their favorite lobbyists and corporate pals.

Period.

Ginx, do some pastors fail? You bet. I wouldn't and don't tolerate it in them. Why should I do so with any other entity or person?

And btw, your "babies die" remark is truly bizarre. I assume that your heroism is predicated upon casting your vote to send the bill to someone else? Or, if we speak of the present business, then it doesn't provide any of the things you think it does. As of today, there's not a single new person with insurance as a result of this law. What exists is now a legal obligation for people to buy a private product, which, if people could afford same, they'd already have.

What a piece of work Ginx is - that tolerance factor isn't set to stun is it?

Republicans had 8 years to do anything, but they sat on the fat checks of insurance companies. Democrats are sitting on those same donations, but they at least are allowing millions who COULD NOT GET HEALTHCARE to now have the opportunity. Everyone should be covered on a national plan, with private plans available through jobs or purchase.

It has NOTHING to do with Democrats making anyone rely on anything. These people were DYING before, and you just ignore it because you don't have to meet them.

As someone who works in Healthcare, alibut as a volunteer-I dont agree with Ginx's vulgarity, but he is correct. Volunteer fundraisers for healthcare, (If I understood the blog correctly) just aren't practical, except in a 'Walk for MS' sense. My head is reeling as I type this, from a stream of messages from our patients, many of whom can't afford dental care, co-payments, prescriptions, insurance, or needed surgery. We at the clinic give out free care and hand out samples of medications and the needs still aren't being met. I'm not sure how Universal Healhtcare came to be a pee-ing match between Christian and Atheist, Liberal vs. Conssrvative, but anything would be better than this Darwinian (Irony not intended) mess we have in place now.
